The Industrial Revolution and Its Consequences
There's this argument that the Industrial Revolution leads to high domestic inequality. And suddenly you have all of these elites with surplus savings, which then they then need to put somewhere. That means capital exports or overseas outlets for investments, which just fundamentally leads to colonialism and this scramble for territory. But I guess that's not quite hitting the core claim of the Lenin story here.
