The History of Menendez's Missions to the South of the United States
In 15 87, the fortress at santa helena on paris island was abandoned. The forces in that entire northern area were finally withdrawn southward and concentrated back at saint augustine. So they were forced to retrench at that power base. And manendez built up a network of alliances with indigenous leaders which then insured some degree of security and stability for the colony within the timuka zone.
