What is it about the American experience that makes it possible for us to generate such great folk music? I think we should probably have Ted Joya on the program to answer that question. If you're looking at things I know better like spirituals, blues, and jazz, a lot of it is the creative engagement of suffering with hope. And although I don't like him as a theologian at all, James Cohen's book articulates that sense of yearning for freedom.
