In the West, our perception of East Asian education is that it's large class sizes. And yet they perform really highly on tests of problem solving and conceptual understanding. So how can they possibly be doing so well in things we care about if they're doing what we consider to be bad teaching? I think a kind of a lovely balance between those two extremes of pedagogical approaches has been found by John Biggs.
