The federal government was trying to slow or stop immigrants from all over Asia from gaining citizenship. A significant percentage of the South Asians who applied for naturalization were convincing the court that they were white and therefore being allowed to naturalize. In 1923, the federal government appealed their case against then citizenship all the way up to the Supreme Court. It became known as the United States for Sbagat Singh Finn.
