Is There a Difference Between Maps and Distributed Codes?

If there's continuous stuff out in the world that the brain is trying to deal with, it's going to represent that in terms of a map. So i think the more that there is sort of continuity and sort of spatial relationships between things, the phenomenon, the more likely it is to be to be mapped. There are these little comparisons that happen when we, for example, perceive a shape and need to take the patterns of light and dark and turn it into like, a meaningful shape. And so that process requires a lot of comparisons,. A lot of local communication between these cells that are now neighbouring. Those kinds of comparisons and that sort of spatial relationship really particularly lends itself to the map
