"I think part of the reason why Black Lives Matter became such a lightning rod for so many people is that the claim wasn't leveled toward people. Who had expressed any skepticism as to the fact it was leveled at everyone," he says. "If you already believe that Black Lives Matter, if you know that the bag is not a toy, eventually you're going to recoil at being reminded of it." He adds: "We make ourselves dumber when we issue these kind of edicts in the form of self help or instruction"
