Milton's Paradise Lost
Milton was a sincere believer. Did he have his own soul on the line here? He understood conscience as God speaking to each person. And that's another way in which I think he resonates in our times. When I teach Milton, students who don't share his religious beliefs find him intellectually and philosophically engaging.
