Many people find reassuring, thinking about global catastrophic risks. Catastrophic risks are almost all low probability events. Even if the chance is low, given enough time, it's bound to happen. We have developed technologies or other things which enable us to deal with them. But no one knows what else may have changed in that time. And so we can't afford to relax and say 'it will never happen'
