The Second Chorus - Sunny's Solo
The first 16 bars of this solo are the most important. Listen for his phrasing, listen to the way that he's bouncing around and developing this two note motif,. But also follow the form. He does that through his first two choruses. And it's a way of making his solo line up with the phrasing of the melody.
There's nothing like a good instrumental solo—that moment when a lone player stands in the spotlight and takes the helm, leading the band in an uncharted direction. On the first edition of Strong Solos, Kirk takes apart a few of his favorite solos, which a special focus on players who use motivic development, also known as theme and variations.
