What Happened to the Old Coins?

In the old days, coins were either silver or gold. So we find lots of coins in archaeological sites. You know, sometimes you find pots that have been buried by people long ago and then forgotten for whatever reason. The new ruler would need to issue new coins with his face on top of it - so what happens?
