The Inflections of English
English still uses inflections to show possession, specifically the apostrophe s. We can also express possession with the preposition of. Back in english relied much more on inflections. Any time a word was borrowed, a complicated set of inflectional endings had to be assigned to it. Nouns were classified as masculine or feminine and that dictated the type of endings which were used.
