The American Military in the 19 Seventies - The First Gulf War
Military leaders such as joint chiefs man general colin powell saw the first gulf war as the cure for this disease. Powell and many of his successors were determined to keep it there. They believed that avoiding quagmires like vi nam was part of the key to achieving that goal. The militarys image suffered from incidents like abu grabe and guantanimo bay, but not enough to much affect american popular support for or belief in the armed forces as institutions. Vi nam sindrome has now become irac sindrome.
