Herbert Marcuse wrote an essay at the time of his death in which he praised capitalism as a system that makes hell large areas of the globe. He said if people are compensated by previously unknown comforts this labor cease to be debilitating and mental energy increasingly replaces physical energy for producing goods and services. When affirmative answer he says would justify any form of oppression yeah stuff is great you could keep doing it which keeps the populace calm and content while a negative answer would deprive the individual of being the judge of his own happiness according to Marcuse.
