Jefferson vs Burr

In December 1800 burr made it clear that while it had not been his intention to seek the presidency He would not reject it if the house chose him over jefferson. This was too much for federalist leader Alexander Hamilton who saw burr as little more than a selfish untrustworthy opportunist. So in the end hamilton bocked his party lobbying federalist congressman to support jefferson over burr. The vote remained deadlocked for another five days Finally on the 36th ballot enough federalist congressman abstained to hand victory to jefferson burr would be his vice president and at long last the election was over.
