The Importance of Gwen John
She defines herself as a Parisian artist. She sends back works from Paris to London with French titles. I mean, this is, you know, Virginia Woolf's Room of One's Own, writ large. It's in the book, a little detail that she sets off in 1903 to walk to Rome with D'Arilia, a famous model, again, for Augustus John. And she paints her as well. They set off two women sleeping in the fields, determined to get to Rome to take on art education. Again, again, fantastically bold and... Yeah, and you feel this all the way through her life.
