The History of the Airport
When the airport was initially conceived, they envisioned it as a large international hub with passengers passing through and connecting. Over time, that system has kind of fallen out of favor a bit because airlines are running more point to point rather than hubs. On top of that, at the time, Air Berlin was the only airline that actually used Berlin as a hub.
