The people of Mecca were scared out of their minds. They thought that Muhammad was going to exact some sort of vengeance or retribution against him. But instead, the Muslims went directly to the Kaaba and took it in a bloodless way. "It created a tremendous amount of prestige for the Islamic cause," says historian Peter Bergen.
