Is There an Alternative to Fertilizers?
The holy grail would be to maintain high yields with minimal or no fertilizer at all. Most economists would say, well, that's ridiculous. But there is one person who has managed to do it. And he's a farmer called ean tolhurst who grows fruit and vegetables in south oxfordshire. He's managed to hit the lower bound of conventional yields on good soil without any fertilizers,. Any manure, any pestecides, any herbicide, no inputs at all, except a tiny sprinkling of wood chip. If you can get the biology right, you can do amazing things with very little.
