In the 19 seventies and eighties, some reforms were passed. The coroner is still an elected position, but now autopsies must be performed by a certified forensic pathologist. In spite of all this, the problems didn't go away. Long stories short, the medico legal system in mississippi throughout much of the nineties and into the two thousands with sub standard it was shot through with fraud. Was overworked. It was overpaid. People were making lots of money at the expense of the citizens of the state of mississippi.
