Dickens wrote down an autobiographical fragment of David Copperfield. He showed it to Foster and said, nobody else must ever know about this till I'm dead. A few years later he decided that he needed to address it head on in a novel. Dickens had what essentially is quite clearly a nervous breakdown as he was writing the book.
