Milton was hired to write a response to the king's book, Iconoclasties. His mastery of Latin led to his appointment as Secretary for foreign languages. He became an increasingly prominent cultural commentator and polemicist. Milton had common enemies with some people who ended up imprisoned in the Tower of London.
