Sometimes it's hard to know what the informal expectations are. I think perhaps we should have asked that more clearly of our students. One really phenomenal Ghanaian PhD candidate was publishing very well in international journals and was also able to publish in English. But her supervisor kept changing the goalposts so that he would keep her publishing for him before allowing her to graduate. So those kind of manipulative, interpersonal relationships was also something that we were picking up alongside the broader trend of university rankings and publishing culture.
