Newtonian gravity is a perfect example of two very different ontologies, very different sets of words about what the world is. In entonian mechanics, you have space and time separately, and thereis a field, the gravitational field, that pushes things around sos en language that you're speaking. And we're not comparing these two theories directly to each other. We're comparing both of them to our observations. So i think even though coon would have said they are in some sense incommensurable, it's not the perfect example of incommensurability, but it's in the same spirit.
Welcome to the April 2022 Ask Me Anything episode of Mindscape! These monthly excursions are funded by Patreon supporters (who are also the ones asking the questions). I take the large number of questions asked by Patreons, whittle them down to a more manageable size — based primarily on whether I have anything interesting to say about them, not whether the questions themselves are good — and sometimes group them together if they are about a similar topic. Enjoy!
