Oysters - A Luxury Food

Oysters have been central to British food since the Romans arrived in 55 BC. The Roman Emperor, Aulus Vitelius, reportedly ate 1,200 oysters in one single sitting. By the end of the mid 19th century, it's estimated that London is alone 8700 million oysters every year. If you think that London was about 2.5 million people, that's almost 300 oysters per person per year.
