The Importance of Subjectivity in the Modern State
Citizenship is the primary category of subjectivity in the modern secular episteme. It's not accurate, it's anachronistic, right, to apply these modern terms indefinitely backwards in time. And when we do, it actually masks and conceals from us the changes that have happened in subjectivity or subjecthood. What was the relationship between the subject and the governing sort of apparatus if it wasn't a state? We can't even begin to ask that question.
