The Importance of Religion in the Empire
Within the Islamic empire, Muslims had the greatest rights. Christians and Jews could convert to Islam but not vice versa. The major non-Muslim religious groups were called millets. These included most importantly the Eastern Orthodox Christians, the Armenian Christians,. Other minor religious groups also had some degree of autonomy.
