The term gaslighting is still somewhat seen as a bit of a colloquialism. There's been this debate around its overuse and how that has potentially minimized the actual effects of the abuse that it's used to describe. In countries like the UK, you can be charged with gaslighting as part of criminal domestic violence laws.

The term 'gaslighting' has grown in popularity in recent years and become part of our shared psychobabble, giving our generation the language to describe a pattern of behaviour that has existed for centuries.
