There were always close connections between the united states and cuba. The connection was never equal or even soh i don't know how far forward you want to go, but there were close economic relations,. American culture was very well known in cuba. Cuban culture was actually well known in the us. But one of the things that becomes clear throughout the nineteenth century, and then especially in the twentieth century, is that american vestment in cuba ends up coming at the expense of cuban investment in Cuba.
