Why ran across an interesting poll from Pew asking about people's attitudes toward gun control. Over 90% of Republicans and over 90% of Democrats said they would be in favor of restrictions that would prevent guns from getting into the hands of the mentally ill. And you don't see politicians going there where you see them going is toward regulations that any reasonable person would know would have absolutely no effect on anything. Their goal here is not common sense regulation, it's stirring up the pot prior to an election.
