Kemu was diagnosed with tuberculosis as a teenager and fell ill very suddenly. He had relapses, he went through these kind of lung surgeries that are terrifying to talk about now where they would actually collapse a lung to try to get it to heal. So yeah, even though the novel is an allegory, there's kind of this granular truth to the parts of it that are about an epidemic.
