The Origins of the British Wine Industry in the UK
In the 17th through early 20th centuries, Britain is not producing wine itself. So why did British settlers elect to produce wine in seemingly far-from places like New Zealand and Australia and South Africa? One of the ideas is that if you can produce it locally, then you don't have to go to the hassle and the expense of importing it from someplace else. And I think there's even a hope and an expectation that wine could be a cash crop in the way that tobacco or cotton or wool functions in other parts of the British Empire.
