The Battle of the Bishops
In the 1160s, King Henry II and Thomas Beckett fought over who would be named Bishop of Canterbury. The fight was an unlikely conflict because he had been a close associate of Henry II before being namedbishop. He seems to have realized that the freedom of the church is more important than consolidation of royal power.
