Chicago History Podcast

CHAPTER

The Fujita Scale and the Chicago Tornado

Fujita scale categorizes the strength of tornadoes from zero to five based on wind speeds and ensuing damage. Fujita was born in Japan in 1920 before moving to the States in 1953 to work in research at the University of Chicago. The most serious catastrophe of that storm occurred at the Michigan Southern Freight Depot, one of the largest freight depots in the world. A modified version of the Fujita scale was introduced in 2007 and is in use today.
