A lot of evidence points to the composer being wallace Willis a freed slave of african descent who was legally considered a native american. Devorjak almost certainly wouldn't have known that fact. He tried to combine negro and indian themes in the development. Every composer treats a koda differently, and de vorga does a truly novel thing with his koda. It's not an exact quotation, but then again, why should it be? This is a symphony inspired by the new world, not full of quotations from it.
