Hermam's neighborhood consisted of a single loop coiled around a dense tussle of scrub oaks. She sometimes got the feeling the folks with lakeside porches didn't like her and her mam, or the other people who lived in old trailer homes and burned their garbage and metal drums. But hadn't they all been there forever? Whereas the nice lake houses were mostly new, the street split at the bottom of the hill. One end went back the length of two homes, concluding in a coal do sack in front of the edmonson's house,. which was technically still a public street, but which they regarded as their personal driveway.
