Sebelius' Violin Concerto
Sebelius'Violin Concerto is the only 20th century violin concerto that has found its way into the Big Five. Sebelius was grappling with something all composers who still wanted to use traditional forms were grappling with as well. The Tchaikovsky violin concerto was only 25 years old, and had only recently been made popular by the Czech violinist Carl Halir after it had had its own disastrously reviewed premiere. We'll hear all about the Concerto today, the circumstances that created its disastrous opening, and ask the question of what makes Sebelius such a distinctive composer.
