Researchers led by Andrew Sweetman uncover 'dark oxygen' in the Pacific's Clary and Clipperton zone through polymetallic nodules, revealing a unique oxygen production phenomenon 4,000 meters deep without photosynthesizing organisms, possibly through nodules acting as a geobattery and undergoing electrolysis.
