The City of God by Augustine
Augustine argues that God can't simply serve up rewards and punishments in real time. Having faith in spite of calamity adds to the moral improvement of Christians, he writes. Though many good Christians had died, Augustine writes, they died with dignity and mental clarity as Christians.
