The Battle of Constantinople

On April 6th, the bombardment began and it was to continue without a break for six weeks. MMAT had been counting on artillery rather than manpower in order to break down the walls. A four-hour assault by the Ottomans failed. The Byzantines were quick to repair the damage and strengthen the weakened portions of the wall. In return for their voluntary surrender, they offered the inhabitants freedom of life and property under Ottoman protection.
