Gin was blamed for the death of thousands by overconsumption, murder, negligence and insanity. There were eight parliamentary acts that tried to crack down on Mothers Ruin from 1729 to 1751. The eighth act, the final act in 1751, raised the taxes and the fees for retail and licenses to reduce spirit consumption. It wasn't until the 1830s that beer became cheaper than Gin for the first time in over a century.
