The Problem With Self-Defeating Patterns of Choice
The author argues that self-defeating patterns of choice need not be the result of the self losing control over behavior. He says they can instead figure as instances of what he calls "self-defeating self-governance" Author: If one's preferences are cyclic, then one can follow them even if good options were available along the way. And so here, you're not alienated from your preferences in order to still get into trouble.
