The Importance of Self-Directed Learning
John Holt coined the term unschooling in 1977. John Taylor God who passed away last fall but was New York State Teacher of the Year and an author of Dumbing us Down and Weapons of Mass Instruction. He famously resigned from his 30 year teaching position in the New York City Public Schools on the editorial pages of the Wall Street Journal in the early 1990s saying he could no longer hurt kids to make a living. I think that this is very much true for both young people and teachers that both are kind of caught up into this compulsory and coercive system of schooling. We can help them through facilitating their learning supporting them connecting them to resources but we shouldn't be in the business of shaping people
