How Important Is Your Access to Politicians?
Getting too close to politicians on either side of politics is always a mistake for journalists. You might think the access makes them a great contact but the compromises and self-editing required to retain them means that ends up being just a lie you tell yourself. Unless you're saying what your access is how can you believe any of it? I never really wanted to be involved in anything like that and I wouldn't choose it at all for myself. It does feel like sort of little sideshow what's going along over the road.
