The Blessings of Self-Education

You became an economist almost by accident and with little formal training. How do you think about self-education? Is it more of a blessing or curse? I've learned a lot in a long career, always finding new techniques that I didn't know about. And there is a tendency to remember things that you learn for yourself rather than are drilled into you.
