The Powerless Church
The church was increasingly, from the time of the late roman empire onward, laden with administrative and social control functions. But he felt positively as the dawning of a new age in the 19 sixties and even before, was the potential freeing of the church from all those instrumental purposes. He wanted it to be purely the gospel, purely the surprise, purely the pearl in the net,. As he says, purely the divine bud, that the flower in eternity. It was a vision of the gospel as what it originally was.
