Cuthbert drowned in December 1823. Despite the belief the penal colony was escape proof, a bunch of convicts did try to escape. Though most were unsuccessful, either being recaptured or dying in the wilderness. Some inmates went to extreme lengths to leave - including murdering one constable guarding their quarters.
