PICU Management Framework for Severe Iron Deficiency Anemia

When a patient is admitted to the PICU with severe anemia, the usual principles of good PICU care should proceed. No single test or even a combination of tests reliably documents iron deficiency anemia in all clinical situations. When the hemoglobin is less than five grams per deciliter, the patient should be given sequential, small aliquots of blood. Typically, you are going to be transfusing 2.5 ml per kilo very slowly over 3 to 4 hours.
