Oppenheimer's Transgressive Comments
In 1945, in anticipation of the growing Soviet threat, Oppenheimer's superiors asked him to work on the development of a hydrogen bomb. In 1947, the government authorized a new program called the Atomic Energy Commission which assumed the Manhattan Project's operations. Despite his new duties, he remained publicly outspoken about his criticisms of the government. His transgressive comments reached their peak when, in 1953, he threatened to intentionally leak a military secret to the public.
