D c ten was the world's first three engined wide body air liner. Was carrying 12,000 lons of fire retardant in a huge tank attached to the fuselage. The crew were on their third run of the day over the wildfire that would have consumed 12 thousand 400 acres of forest. Liquid fire retardant is mainly water, but mixed with phos ates and sulphate salts,. It acts as a fertilizer to encourage new growth once the fire has passed.
